In order to be a very versatile drummer, it is important to take the time to research the various drumsticks and other devices that are available to create different sounds. There are a variety of factors that must be considered when choosing drumsticks for drumming purposes. Some of the main factors that should be considered when selecting drumsticks include the material of the drumsticks, the size of the drumstick and the tip of the drumstick. All of these elements of a drumstick will ultimately affect the types of sounds that the drummer is incapable of producing when drumming.

Drumsticks can be made with a variety of materials which is why it is so very important for drummers to take the time to understand how the material the drumstick is made from can ultimately affect the sound of the drumming. In general, most drumsticks are made from wood. However, it should be noted the different types of wood produces different sounds. Thus, it is necessary to choose a drumstick based on the type of sound that is desired. For example, the most common wood choices for drumsticks include Maple, Rosewood, Japanese oak and hickory. Each of these particular woods has a different density and because of this the sound that is produced when using each of these on the drums set will be different.

When choosing a drumstick, there are numbers and letters placed on it which identify the circumference and the recommended usage. There are three different lettering categories for drumsticks which measure their recommended application . They include letters S, B and A.

The tip of the drumstick is also very important. Tips are available in four shapes which include oval, barrel, triangle and round. These different shapes help to produce a different tone when they hit the drum. Furthermore, the tips of drumsticks can also be purchased with nylon tips. Some people prefer nylon tips over the wooden tips because they are more durable and they are believed to provide a more consistent sound.
